Carbon Cleaning for Taxi and Private Hire Drivers
Idling on a rank, short town fares, cold starts at four in the morning and then 40,000 miles a year on top. No other driver puts an engine through this much of the wrong kind of work.
If you drive a hackney or a private hire car for a living, your engine is not doing normal motoring. Carbon cleaning for taxi and private hire drivers matters more than it does for the average commuter, and it matters for a specific reason: the work pattern of the job is almost perfectly designed to lay down deposits. Long idles, short fares, endless cold starts, and rarely enough sustained load to burn any of it off again.
This article is about what that does inside the engine, when it is worth spending money on, and — just as importantly — when it is not.
Why the job builds carbon faster than anything else
Carbon deposits come from incomplete combustion and from oil vapour baking onto hot metal. Both are worst when the engine is cool, lightly loaded, or turning over without doing any real work. That is the private hire day in one sentence.
Idling on the rank
An idling engine runs cool, burns fuel inefficiently and produces exhaust gas with very little heat in it. On a diesel that means the exhaust after-treatment sits below its working temperature, and the EGR system is recirculating relatively dirty gas back into an intake that never gets hot enough to keep itself clean. Twenty minutes on a rank outside the station does more harm than twenty minutes at 60mph.
Short town fares
A two-mile drop across town barely gets the coolant up to temperature. Repeat that thirty times a shift and the engine spends its whole life in the warm-up phase, which is exactly the phase where the fuelling is richest and the deposits form fastest. Sheer mileage compression
The average UK car does around 7,000 miles a year. A full-time private hire car can do five or six times that. You are not just building deposits faster per mile — you are stacking up years of wear in months.
A taxi at 45,000 miles a year does a typical driver's decade in under three. Anything you would service annually on a private car, you should be thinking about twice as often on a working one.
What actually gets dirty
In our experience the parts that suffer most on working cars are the ones that see the dirtiest, coolest gas.

None of these fail overnight. They degrade slowly, which is why most drivers never notice — the car just gets a bit heavier, a bit thirstier, a bit more hesitant, and you adapt to it without registering the change. What a carbon clean does — and does not — do here
Let us be straight about this, because there is a lot of nonsense written about carbon cleaning and taxi drivers are a favourite target for it.
What it does: we electrolyse distilled water into hydrogen and oxygen and feed that into the air intake while the engine idles. It helps break down and burn off carbon on valves, injector tips, piston crowns, the EGR and the exhaust side. The loosened material leaves through the exhaust. Nothing is dismantled and no harsh chemicals go into your engine, which matters when the car has to be back on the road that evening.
What it does not do: it does not fix mechanical faults. It will not repair a failing turbo, a leaking injector, a knackered sensor or a DPF that has already been cooked solid. It will not give you a guaranteed MPG figure — anyone quoting you a specific percentage is guessing. And it will not turn a tired 200,000-mile engine into a new one.
It is routine maintenance. It keeps the emissions components fresh and capable so they are less likely to become a repair bill. On a car that earns you money, that is the whole argument.
The money side
An EGR valve replacement on a common diesel typically lands somewhere in the low hundreds of pounds fitted, and a DPF replacement can run into four figures. Those are broad, rough UK guides rather than quotes — the spread between models is enormous. But the shape of the maths is what counts: prevention is cheap, and downtime is expensive twice over, because a taxi off the road is not just a bill, it is lost shifts.
At £99 for a basic clean and £149 for a deep clean, with no call-out fee anywhere in the North East, the sum a working driver is doing is not "will this pay for itself in fuel". It is "does this reduce the odds of an unplanned week off the road". We think it helps. We are not going to pretend it is a guarantee.
How to fit it around a working week
- Pick the interval that matches your mileage. Full time, high mileage: roughly every six months. Part time evenings and weekends: once a year is fine.
- Tie it to your service. Doing both close together makes sense — fresh oil and a clean intake side complement each other. We explain the order in carbon clean before or after a service.
- Book it into a gap, not a day off. A basic clean is 45 to 60 minutes, a deep clean 90 to 120. That is a long break, not a lost shift.
- Have us come to you. Home, driveway, depot or workplace car park — the machine runs from the van. If you have no off-street parking, tell us where you are based during the day and we will work there instead.
- Keep the paperwork. We provide an invoice and receipt every time. It builds a documented history, which is worth real money when the car goes.
When we would tell you not to bother
If your car has a live fault — a management light with a stored code pointing at a specific component, a turbo that whistles and hesitates, a DPF light that keeps coming back within days — spend the money on diagnosis first. A carbon clean on top of an unresolved fault is money you will wish you had kept. We would rather tell you that on the phone than take the booking.
Equally, if the car is on its last legs and you are trading it in next month, a clean is unlikely to change the number you are offered enough to matter. If you are selling privately, that calculation changes — a car that drives sweetly on a test drive sells better.

How often should a taxi or private hire car be carbon cleaned?
Most private cars suit once a year. A full-time private hire car covering 30,000 to 50,000 miles a year is doing three or four years of normal use in twelve months, so every six months is a more sensible interval. If you are part time and doing evenings and weekends only, once a year alongside your service is fine.
Will a carbon clean stop my car failing the licensing emissions check?
We cannot promise that, and anyone who does is overselling. If the car is fundamentally sound and the readings are drifting because the combustion side is sooty, a clean can help bring numbers back into a healthier range. If there is a genuine fault such as a failed sensor, a leaking injector or a collapsed DPF, you need that fixed instead. We will tell you honestly which one it looks like.

Is it worth it on a high-mileage hackney or PH car?
Usually yes, because the vehicles that gain the most are the ones doing exactly the driving that builds deposits fastest. The exception is a car that already has a serious mechanical problem. Carbon cleaning is routine maintenance, not a repair, and spending £149 on a car that needs a turbo is money in the wrong place.
