Is My Car Too High-Mileage for a Carbon Clean?

The short answer is no — there is no mileage limit. The longer answer is that mileage is the wrong question, and what you should be asking instead is on this page.

We get this call most weeks. "It's on 168,000 — is it too far gone?" The honest answer is that we have cleaned engines with well over 200,000 miles on them and turned down cars with 60,000, because a high-mileage car in good mechanical health is a fine candidate for a carbon clean and a low-mileage car with a fault is not.

Mileage tells you how long an engine has been working. It tells you almost nothing about whether it is working properly now. So here is what actually determines the answer, roughly grouped by where cars tend to be at each stage.

What happens to an engine as the miles pile on

Two separate things accumulate over a car's life and people constantly confuse them.

Deposits build up on intake valves, injector tips, piston crowns, the EGR and the exhaust side. They are the reason your car has quietly got a bit lazier every year — the process described in why your MPG quietly drops. Deposits are reversible. That is what we work on.

Wear is bores, rings, valve stem seals, bearings, timing chains and turbo bearings. Wear is not reversible by any cleaning process, ours included. It needs parts and a spanner.

A high-mileage engine usually has more of both. Whether a clean is worth your money comes down to which one is dominating.

We do not turn work away because of the odometer. We turn it away because of what the engine is doing.

Notice that the "no" rows have no mileage attached. That is deliberate — the disqualifiers are conditions, not numbers. We set them out fully in can a carbon clean damage my engine?

The six questions we ask on the phone

  1. Does it use oil between services? Topping up regularly points at wear, and wear will re-contaminate a cleaned engine quickly.
  2. Any smoke? Blue means oil. Grey or heavy black means something needs looking at. A puff of white vapour on a cold morning is normal.
  3. Any warning lights? If yes, a diagnostic is the better spend. See when carbon is the culprit.
  4. Any mechanical noise? Rattle on start-up, tapping, knocking. Those are repairs, not maintenance.
  5. How has it been serviced? Regular oil changes with the right specification are the single biggest factor in how well an old engine has survived.
  6. What sort of miles? A 180,000-mile car that lived on the A1 is often in better shape than a 90,000-mile one that never left town.

Being realistic about the result

If your car is a healthy high-mileage engine, expect a return of some of what deposits have taken — usually a smoother idle, better throttle response and slightly less hesitation. Some owners report a small improvement in economy; we will not put a figure on it, for the reasons explained in does a carbon clean really improve MPG?

What it will not do is make a 200,000-mile engine feel like a new one. Worn parts stay worn. If your car feels tired because the suspension is soft, the clutch is slipping and the gearbox whines, cleaning the combustion side will not touch any of that.

And on a genuinely old engine, expect the improvement to be a gradient rather than a switch. Is it worth spending on a car you might replace?

Fair question, and the answer depends on your plan.

Keeping it two more years? Yes, worth doing annually, particularly on a diesel where the EGR and DPF are the expensive risks. Selling it in the next couple of months? Possibly, if it drives a bit flat and is otherwise sound — see what to do before the first viewing. Scrapping it in the spring, or facing a repair bill bigger than the car is worth? Don't. Put the money towards the next one.

Is my car too high-mileage for a carbon clean?

There is no mileage cut-off. What matters is mechanical condition, not the number on the dash. A healthy, well-serviced 180,000-mile engine is a perfectly sensible candidate. A 70,000-mile engine that is burning oil, misfiring or has a head gasket problem is not, and we would decline that one.

Does a carbon clean work as well on an older engine?

Higher-mileage engines often have more deposit to work on, so there can be more to gain — but they are also more likely to have genuine wear that cleaning cannot address. Be realistic: it can restore some of what deposits have taken away, but it cannot restore compression, bores or worn valve seals.

Could a clean expose a fault my old engine was hiding?

Carbon does not meaningfully hold a worn engine together, so a clean does not cause a fault to appear. What can happen on any tired engine is that an existing weakness shows itself around the same time as any other maintenance. This is why we check the car over before we start and turn the job down where we see an active fault.

When would you tell me not to bother?

When the engine has an active mechanical fault — heavy oil use, blue smoke, a misfire, head gasket symptoms, coolant loss or serious noise. Also when the car is genuinely at the end of its life and about to be scrapped, or when a diagnostic would be a better use of the same money. We will say so on the phone rather than turn up and take the booking.
