Does a Carbon Clean Really Improve MPG?

Sometimes, by an amount nobody can predict in advance. Here is the honest version — why we refuse to quote you a percentage, and how to measure the difference on your own car properly.

Search around and you will find carbon cleaning companies promising 10%, 15%, even 20% better fuel economy. We are not going to do that, because we cannot know it, and neither can they. The honest answer to whether a carbon clean improves MPG is: it can, sometimes noticeably, sometimes not measurably at all, and the deciding factor is the condition of your engine before we start.

That is a less satisfying answer than a number. It is also the true one, and it is the reason we would rather you read this page before booking than feel let down afterwards.

The mechanism is real — that bit isn't in doubt

Carbon deposits genuinely cost fuel, and there is nothing controversial about why.

Deposits on intake valves and ports disturb airflow and, worse, act like a sponge. On a port-injected engine they soak up fuel during transients and release it later, so the mixture the engine actually burns is never quite what the management system intended.

Deposits on injector tips distort the spray pattern. A fuel injector is a precision atomiser — it needs to produce a fine, even cone. Coke it up and you get a coarser, uneven spray, larger droplets, and fuel that does not fully burn. Unburnt fuel is wasted fuel by definition.

Deposits on piston crowns and in the chamber retain heat and can encourage knock, which on a petrol engine makes the ECU pull ignition timing. Retarded timing means less work out of the same fuel.

A fouled EGR stops metering exhaust gas accurately, so the mixture drifts from optimum.

Remove those deposits and the engine goes back to burning fuel more like it did when it was new. That is the whole idea. What nobody can tell you in advance is how much of that decline your particular engine has accumulated.

A badly fouled engine has a lot to give back. A clean one has almost nothing. The gain you get is a measure of how bad it was, not how good we are.

Why the range is so enormous

Two identical cars, same age, same mileage, can be in completely different states inside depending on how they have been used and maintained.

On top of that, the underlying variation in real-world fuel economy is huge. Cold weather alone can knock a substantial chunk off winter MPG. Tyre pressures, a roof box, a heavy right foot, a different commute, even a change from summer to winter fuel blends all move the number around. If you are trying to detect a modest genuine change against that background noise, you have to measure carefully or you will fool yourself in either direction.

How to actually measure it, properly

If you want to know whether it worked on your car, this is the method. It takes a bit of discipline but it gives you an answer you can trust.

  1. Ignore the trip computer entirely. It estimates consumption from injector duty cycle, it is commonly optimistic, and it carries a long rolling average that will smear any real change across hundreds of miles. It is fine for a rough live readout, useless as a measuring instrument.
  2. Measure brim to brim. Fill the tank until the pump clicks off, at the same pump on the same forecourt, and stop there — no topping up to a round number. Zero the trip meter.
  3. Drive your normal route. Ideally the same commute, same roads, same sort of traffic. A tank that is half motorway one time and all town the next tells you nothing.
  4. Refill at the same pump, same click-off point. Note the litres and the miles on the trip. Miles divided by litres, multiplied by 4.546, gives you MPG.
  5. Do it at least twice before, and twice after. One tank either side is not enough. Two or three gives you a sense of the natural spread, and you should only believe a change that is clearly bigger than that spread.
  6. Keep everything else the same. Same tyre pressures, no roof bars appearing halfway through, same season if you can manage it.

Do that and whatever number you get is real. It might be a pleasant surprise. It might be nothing. Either way you will know, rather than guessing based on how the car feels — and cars very often feel better after a clean in ways that have more to do with throttle response and smoothness than with fuel.

What people notice more than MPG

Honestly, the feedback we get is rarely about the fuel gauge. It is about how the car drives: cleaner pick-up from low revs, less hesitation off the line, a smoother idle, less of the flat spot that had crept in so gradually nobody registered it. And the strongest argument for the job is not economy at all. It is keeping the emissions components — EGR, DPF, turbo vanes — from fouling to the point where they need replacing. Where fuel economy actually comes from

If saving fuel is your main goal, be aware that a carbon clean is well down the list of things that will help. Tyre pressures, driving style, removing roof bars, planning journeys so the engine gets hot — all of those are free and all of them reliably beat anything we can do. It is also worth understanding that the decline you are trying to reverse is gradual and only partly deposit-related. Some of it is wear that no cleaning will undo. Why your MPG quietly drops every year separates the recoverable from the permanent.

So, is it worth £99?

If you are buying it purely as a fuel-saving investment, be sceptical — the payback is uncertain and depends on a starting condition nobody has measured. If you are buying it as annual maintenance that keeps the combustion and emissions side of a car in good order, generates an invoice for the history folder, and quite possibly makes the car nicer to drive, then it is a reasonable spend. Why won't you tell me how much MPG I'll gain?

Because we would be making it up. The gain depends entirely on how fouled your engine was to begin with, and we cannot know that before we arrive. Anyone quoting you a guaranteed percentage before seeing the car is quoting a marketing figure, not a measurement.

Can I trust the trip computer to show the difference?

Worse, they carry a long rolling average, so a genuine change takes hundreds of miles to show and gets muddled with your driving in the meantime. Use brim-to-brim fill measurements instead.

If my car is already well maintained, is there any point?

For fuel economy alone, probably not much — a clean engine has little to recover. The case for cleaning a well-kept car is preventative: keeping the EGR, intake and injectors from fouling in the first place, which is where the real money is. Do not buy it expecting an MPG jump.

Will any improvement last?
