12 Realistic Ways to Improve Fuel Economy in the UK
Ranked honestly, cheapest first. The uncomfortable truth is that the free things beat everything you can buy — including what we sell.
If you want to improve fuel economy in the UK, the internet will happily sell you gadgets, additives and services. Most of it does very little. What actually works is a short list of unglamorous habits and jobs, and the top few cost nothing at all.
We run a business that charges money to clean engines and we are still going to tell you that items one to five on this list matter more than item nine. That is the point of the article.
The free ones — do these first
1. Drive like you can see further ahead
This is the biggest single variable and it costs nothing. Every time you accelerate hard and then brake, you have converted fuel into heat in your brake discs. Lift early, coast to lights that are already red, leave a gap so you can flow rather than stop. Between two drivers in identical cars on the same route, the difference is large — larger than any product you could bolt on.
2. Check tyre pressures monthly
Cold, first thing, to the figure in the door aperture or filler flap. Tyres lose pressure over time regardless of use, and they lose more as temperature falls. Under-inflation raises rolling resistance and costs fuel constantly. Five minutes a month, free at most forecourts.
3. Take the roof bars off
Roof bars, boxes and cycle carriers wreck aerodynamics and the penalty is worst at motorway speed, exactly where you cover most miles. If they live on the car all summer for two weekends of use, take them off between trips.
4. Empty the boot
Weight matters most in stop-start driving, where you accelerate that mass repeatedly. The tool chest, the bags for the tip, the two bags of sand from last winter — none of that needs to be in there.
5. Combine journeys instead of splitting them
Three separate cold-start trips burn far more than one longer trip covering the same errands, because the engine spends the first several minutes of each running rich. This is also the single biggest thing you can do for engine deposits, which we cover in why short journeys wreck your engine's internals.
Five things, no money spent, and between them they outrank every product on the market. Start there and you will know how much of a problem you actually have.
The cheap maintenance ones
6. Change the oil on time, and use the right grade
Old, diluted or wrong-viscosity oil raises internal friction. If your car does low annual mileage on short damp journeys — which describes a lot of cars round here — change by time, not distance. The grade on the filler cap is not a suggestion.
7. Replace the air filter
Cheap, quick, and frequently skipped on budget servicing. A restricted filter makes the engine work harder to breathe. Ask whether yours was actually changed at the last service or just "inspected".
8. Sort spark plugs and ignition (petrol)
Worn plugs mean a weaker spark and less complete combustion. They are on the schedule for a reason and going well past the interval costs you fuel long before it causes a misfire.
9. Deal with binding brakes
A dragging caliper is a constant drain. Cars that sit outside through salty winters are prone to seized slider pins. If one wheel is hotter than the others after a run, get it looked at — it is a safety point as well as an economy one.

10. Clean the combustion side
This is where we come in, and we will be careful about it. Deposits on intake valves, injector tips and the EGR path genuinely cost fuel — a coked injector atomises coarsely and coarse atomisation burns less completely. Removing them can restore some of what you have lost.
But how much depends entirely on how fouled the engine was. A badly neglected direct injection petrol or a short-trip diesel has plenty to recover. A car that already gets long runs and has been cleaned before has very little. We will not quote you a percentage, and we are suspicious of anyone who does. 11. Choose tyres on rolling resistance, not just price
The EU tyre label grades fuel efficiency from A to E. It is on every new tyre and almost nobody looks at it. Over the life of a set, a better grade can be worth more than the price difference — and unlike most economy measures, you have to buy tyres anyway.
12. Fix the fault you have been ignoring
A lazy lambda sensor, a small vacuum leak, a partly blocked DPF forcing repeated regenerations — all of these cost fuel continuously and none of them get better on their own. If your economy dropped suddenly rather than gradually, this is where to look, and diagnosis is worth paying for.

How to know whether any of it worked
Measure brim to brim. Fill to the pump's first click, zero the trip, drive your normal route, refill at the same pump to the same click, then divide miles by litres and multiply by 4.546. Do two or three tanks before you change anything and two or three after. Ignore the trip computer entirely — it estimates rather than measures, it flatters, and its rolling average hides real changes.
Without that discipline you will convince yourself of whatever you were hoping for. With it, you get an actual answer.
The bit we would rather you understood
Fuel economy is not really the reason to have an engine cleaned. The better reason is that keeping the intake, injectors, EGR and exhaust side clear reduces the chance of the expensive failures — a clogged EGR, a seized turbo, a DPF that needs replacing. That is a repair-avoidance argument, not an MPG one, and it is the honest case for the service. What is the single biggest thing I can change?
How you drive, followed closely by tyre pressures. Both are free, both take effect immediately, and both reliably outperform anything you can buy. Smooth anticipation instead of accelerate-and-brake is worth more than any product on a shelf.
Do fuel-saving gadgets and magnets work?
No. Devices that clip on a fuel line, magnets, in-line vortex generators and similar have no plausible mechanism and no credible evidence. If a change to your car could deliver a large economy gain for a few pounds, manufacturers would already have fitted it.
Is premium fuel worth paying for?
Occasionally, but rarely on economy grounds. Some engines that specify high octane genuinely respond to it, and the detergent packages in higher-grade fuels do help keep injectors clean over time. On an ordinary car running standard fuel, the price difference usually swallows any benefit.
Where does a carbon clean rank on this list?
Around the middle, and only for engines carrying real deposit build-up. It cannot beat free measures like tyre pressures and driving style, and on an already clean engine it may make no measurable difference at all. Do the free things first.
