Carbon Clean vs Fuel Additives: Which Actually Works?
We sell one of these two things, so treat this with appropriate suspicion — and then read it anyway, because there are plenty of cars where the tenner bottle is the right answer and we would tell you so.
The carbon clean vs fuel additives question comes up on every job. Someone has a shelf of half-used bottles in the garage and wants to know whether they have been wasting their money. The short answer is: not entirely, but the two things do different jobs in different places, and most of the confusion comes from people expecting a fuel-path product to clean things the fuel never goes near.
What a fuel additive actually is
Strip away the packaging and a fuel-system cleaner is a concentrated dose of detergent, usually a polyetheramine or similar, plus carrier fluid. You pour it in, it mixes with the tankful, and it travels the fuel path: pump, lines, filter, rail, injectors, and then into the combustion chamber where it burns.
That means everything it can clean must sit somewhere in that path. And within that path, it does work. Injector tip deposits genuinely respond to detergent. Fuel system varnish genuinely responds to detergent. There is a reason every mainstream petrol already contains a detergent package as standard — it is doing a real job on every tankful you buy.
Diesel additives add a couple of tricks: cetane improvers, lubricity additives that matter on modern low-sulphur diesel, anti-bacterial treatments for tanks that sit for months, and in some products a fuel-borne catalyst that lowers the temperature at which trapped soot burns, which can genuinely help a DPF regenerate. Those are all real effects.
What it cannot do, and why
Here is the bit the bottles do not say out loud.
- It cannot clean the back of an intake valve on a direct injection engine. The fuel is injected straight into the cylinder. It never touches that surface. This is the single most common carbon problem on modern petrol cars and the additive is structurally incapable of reaching it — we explain why in why modern petrol engines get dirty faster.
- It cannot scrub a caked EGR valve. That soot arrived through the exhaust as a solid. It is on the wrong side of the engine.
- It cannot shift hard, layered, baked-on deposits. Detergent works on soft and greasy. Once carbon has cooked into a hard coke, chemistry at that dilution is not going to lift it.
- It cannot fix mechanical problems. Nor can we. Nobody can. A worn engine is a worn engine.
What a hydrogen carbon clean does differently
Our process comes at the deposits from the other direction. We electrolyse distilled water into hydrogen and oxygen and feed it into the air intake while the engine idles. It goes through the combustion chamber and out through the exhaust, which means it works on the valve faces, piston crowns, injector tips, the chamber itself and the exhaust side including the EGR circuit and the catalyst or DPF — a path an in-tank product simply does not travel.
It is also a controlled, one-off treatment at a known dose over 45 to 120 minutes, rather than a diluted dose spread across a tankful over a fortnight.
And here is our own limitation, stated plainly: it comes in through the air intake, so on a direct injection petrol engine it is not the answer for heavily coked intake ports either. That is a walnut blasting job.

An additive cleans where the fuel goes. A hydrogen clean cleans where the combustion goes. Neither cleans where nothing goes.
When the bottle is the right answer
We will happily talk ourselves out of a booking here, because sending someone away with sensible advice is worth more to a small business than one job.
Use an additive and skip us if:
- Your car is under about five years old, low mileage and fully serviced
- It does regular longer runs that get it properly hot
- There are no symptoms and no fault codes
- You just want a bit of routine housekeeping between services
In that situation there is not much carbon there to remove, and a tenner spent occasionally is entirely proportionate. Spending £99 on a car that has nothing to clean is not a good deal and we are not going to pretend otherwise. We make the same argument in is a carbon clean worth it.
When the bottle will not cut it
- Diesels with EGR and DPF soot loading, especially short-journey cars
- Anything past about 60,000 to 80,000 miles that has never had anything done
- Cars where the symptom is gradual power and economy loss rather than a fuelling glitch
- Vans, taxis and anything that idles for a living
In those cases the deposits are largely outside the fuel path, and no amount of pouring will change that.
The sensible answer: both, in their place
They are not really competitors. A good additive every few thousand miles keeps the fuel side healthy for the price of a pint. A carbon clean once a year alongside your service deals with the combustion and exhaust side that no bottle can reach, and gives you an invoice for the folder, which is worth real money when you come to sell — as we explain in how documented maintenance protects resale value.
What we would ask you not to do is buy either one expecting it to fix a fault. If the car has a warning light, a misfire or a specific symptom that appeared suddenly, spend the money on a diagnosis instead. Both of these products are maintenance. Neither is a repair.

Are fuel additives a waste of money?
No. A reputable fuel-system cleaner from a known brand, used occasionally in a low-mileage car that is otherwise in good shape, is a sensible and cheap bit of housekeeping. It genuinely helps injector tips and fuel system deposits. What it cannot do is reach parts the fuel never touches, or shift heavy established carbon. Judge it by what it is, not by the claims on the bottle.
Can I use an additive instead of a carbon clean?
On a newer, low-mileage, well-serviced car that does regular longer runs, yes — an additive every few thousand miles is proportionate and we would not push you towards spending more. On an older car, a short-journey car, or a diesel with EGR and DPF soot loading, an additive will not do the same job, because most of that deposit is not in the fuel path.
Do additives clean the EGR valve or DPF?
Not meaningfully. Some diesel additives lower the combustion temperature at which soot burns, which can help a DPF regenerate more easily, and that is a real effect. But nothing you pour into the tank scrubs an EGR valve that is already caked in hard soot. That deposit is on the exhaust side of the engine and it got there as a solid.
Is premium fuel the same as using an additive?
Broadly it is a milder version of the same idea — a higher detergent dose delivered every time you fill up rather than a strong dose occasionally. It is a reasonable habit if the price difference does not bother you. It is not a substitute for servicing and it will not remove established deposits.
