These get compared as if they are rivals. They are not. They clean different parts of your engine, and if your intake ports are properly caked, the honest answer is not us.

Search hydrogen carbon clean vs walnut blasting and you will find a lot of people with a commercial interest telling you their method is the good one. We will try to do better than that, because we only offer one of them and we would rather you knew when to go elsewhere than pay us for a job we cannot properly do.

What each process physically is

Hydrogen carbon cleaning

A machine electrolyses distilled water into hydrogen and oxygen. That gas is fed into the air intake while the engine idles. It changes how combustion behaves in the chamber, helping break down and burn off carbon deposits, and the loosened material leaves through the exhaust. Nothing comes apart. No harsh chemicals go into the engine. It takes 45 to 60 minutes for a basic clean or 90 to 120 for a deep one, and we do it on your driveway.

Walnut blasting

A mechanical process. The inlet manifold comes off to expose the intake ports. A shaped adaptor seals against each port in turn, and crushed walnut shell media is blasted at the deposits under compressed air while a vacuum simultaneously extracts the debris. It is done cylinder by cylinder, with the valves for that cylinder closed so nothing gets into the engine. Walnut shell is used because it is hard enough to strip baked carbon but soft enough not to damage aluminium.

It is a workshop job, typically half a day to a full day of labour depending on how buried the manifold is.

Look at that table honestly and the picture is obvious. They barely overlap. The one row where walnut blasting wins outright is the row that matters most on a high-mileage direct injection petrol engine, because that is exactly the surface nothing else can reach. Every row below it is ours.

The cost figures are indicative UK ranges, not quotes. Get a price for your specific engine, because the labour varies enormously between a transverse four cylinder and something with the manifold buried under half the engine bay.

How to work out which one you need

  1. Is it a direct injection petrol engine? If no, walnut blasting is largely irrelevant — port-injected engines wash their own valves and diesels do not have the same problem in the same place.
  2. What mileage, and has anything ever been done? A direct injection petrol at 90,000 miles with no history of any cleaning is a strong candidate for blasting.
  3. What are the symptoms? Cold-start misfires on specific cylinders, a distinctly lumpy cold idle and a measurable loss of pull point towards port deposits. Gradual soot-related dullness, smoke and EGR or DPF codes point the other way.
  4. Get someone to look. A borescope through the intake, or the manifold off, is the only way to actually see. A good specialist will show you the ports before quoting. If nobody has looked, nobody knows.

The honest summary: if a specialist has put a camera in and shown you ports that look like the inside of a chimney, no machine feeding gas through the air intake is going to fix that, ours included.

Where the two work together

The sensible pattern, if you own a direct injection petrol car with real mileage on it, is this. Have the ports blasted once when they need it. Then keep the rest of the engine — chamber, injectors, EGR, exhaust side — in decent shape with a yearly hydrogen clean alongside your service, change the oil on time or early, and get the car properly hot regularly. That combination will not stop port deposits returning, because the underlying design has not changed, but it slows the rate and keeps everything else fresh in the meantime.

On a diesel, walnut blasting is rarely the conversation at all. There the deposits that cause trouble are in the EGR circuit, the turbo and the DPF — all places our process actually reaches, and all covered in EGR valve carbon build-up and DPF problems and carbon cleaning.

Which is better, hydrogen carbon cleaning or walnut blasting?

Neither is better in general, because they clean different places. Walnut blasting is the only proper way to remove heavy baked carbon from the back of direct injection intake valves, and nothing that arrives through the air intake will match it there. Hydrogen cleaning covers the combustion chamber, injector tips, piston crowns and the whole exhaust side including the EGR, which walnut blasting does not touch. If your intake ports are badly caked, blasting is the correct job.

How much does walnut blasting cost in the UK?

As a broad guide, expect somewhere in the region of £300 to £700 at an independent specialist, depending on the engine and how much has to come off to reach the ports. Some V-configuration and heavily packaged engines cost considerably more because of the labour. Treat any figure as indicative and get a quote for your exact car.

Does walnut blasting need to be repeated?

Yes, eventually, because the cause has not gone away — a direct injection engine still has no fuel washing its intake valves. Many owners find themselves back at it every 60,000 to 80,000 miles depending on how the car is driven. Regular hydrogen cleaning and disciplined oil changes will not stop that entirely, but they help slow the rate at which deposits establish.
