DPF Problems and Carbon Cleaning: What Helps, What Doesn't

We get asked this several times a week, so here is the blunt version: a hydrogen clean will not unblock a loaded DPF. What it can do is help stop you getting there in the first place.

DPF problems and carbon cleaning get talked about together constantly, and a lot of what gets said is wrong — some of it by people selling carbon cleaning. We would rather lose a booking than have someone pay us £99 expecting their DPF light to go out.

So let's take it from the top: what a DPF is, how it blocks, what actually clears one, and the genuinely useful — but limited — role a carbon clean plays.

What a DPF is and how it works

A diesel particulate filter sits in the exhaust and traps soot particles that would otherwise go out the tailpipe. It is a ceramic honeycomb with alternately blocked channels, so gas is forced through porous walls and the soot stays behind.

Because it fills up, it has to empty itself, and it does that by burning the soot off. That is regeneration. There are two kinds:

Passive regeneration happens on its own when the exhaust runs hot enough for long enough — sustained motorway or fast A-road driving. You never know it is happening.

Active regeneration is deliberate. When the pressure differential across the filter tells the ECU that soot loading is climbing, it injects extra fuel late in the cycle to raise exhaust temperature and burn the soot out. It typically wants ten to twenty minutes of steady driving to finish. You might notice the fans running hard, a change in idle, a slight smell, or the stop-start system refusing to work.

The single most common cause of a blocked DPF is not a fault. It is a diesel doing short journeys that never let a regeneration finish.

Why they block

Interrupted regenerations are the big one. Your car starts an active regen on the way home, you park after four miles, the cycle aborts. Next journey it tries again, and again you stop. Each aborted attempt dumps extra fuel without completing the burn, soot loading keeps climbing, and eventually the car gives up and warns you. Beyond that: a faulty EGR flooding the engine with exhaust gas raises soot output. Worn injectors atomise badly and make more soot. A turbo passing oil, or an engine burning oil past worn rings, deposits ash the filter can never burn off. Low-quality or wrong-spec oil leaves more ash. And any engine fault causing over-fuelling loads the filter faster.

Ash matters, incidentally. Soot burns off; ash does not. Every DPF slowly accumulates non-combustible ash over its life and eventually needs an off-car clean or replacement no matter how well you drive.

One option not on that list: removal. Taking out a factory-fitted DPF makes the vehicle illegal for road use and it is checked at MOT. Nobody reputable will do it and you should not ask.

Where a carbon clean genuinely helps

Here is the honest case, and it is a preventative one.

A DPF fills with the soot your engine produces. Anything that reduces soot production slows the rate at which the filter loads and lengthens the intervals between regenerations. Fewer regenerations means less fuel dilution of the oil, less thermal stress on the filter and less ash accumulation over the years.

A hydrogen clean works on the components that determine how cleanly the engine burns: injector tips that have coked and lost their spray pattern, intake valves and ports carrying deposits, the EGR path gumming up with soot. Fed into the intake while the engine idles, hydrogen and oxygen help break down and burn off those deposits, which leave through the exhaust. Nothing is dismantled and no chemicals go in — the process is described in full in how hydrogen carbon cleaning works.

Cleaner combustion upstream, less soot arriving at the filter. That is the mechanism, and it is a real one. What it is not is a way of removing soot that has already been trapped in the ceramic. Once it is in there, only heat or a specialist gets it out.

A sensible order of operations

  1. DPF light on, car driving normally? Take it for a sustained run — half an hour at motorway speed in a gear that keeps the revs up. Often that is all it needs.
  2. Light still on, or the car is in limp mode? Garage. Get the codes read and the soot loading percentage checked. That number tells you which option on the table above you are looking at.
  3. Forced regen, if the loading is within range. Then ask why it got there — a repeat blockage usually means an underlying fault.
  4. Fix the underlying cause. Failing EGR, leaking injector, oil consumption, faulty differential pressure sensor. Otherwise you will be back.
  5. Then, once it is sorted, think about prevention. An annual carbon clean, driving that includes at least one proper hot run a week, correct-spec low-ash oil, changed on time.

Being straight about the limits

We will turn work away over this. If someone rings with a DPF light on and asks whether a clean will fix it, we say no and point them at a garage. If the light comes on shortly after a clean, that is not the clean's doing — it is a filter that was already loaded.

What we will happily do is the annual maintenance job on a diesel whose DPF is healthy, because that is where it has value: keeping the injectors, intake and EGR in good order so the filter has an easier life. Will a hydrogen carbon clean unblock my DPF?

No. We want to be completely plain about this. A hydrogen clean works on the intake and combustion side and does not put anything through the filter capable of clearing a genuine blockage. If your DPF light is on and the filter is loaded, you need a forced regeneration or a specialist clean, not us.

So what is the point of a carbon clean for a diesel then?

Prevention. A DPF fills with soot the engine produces, so an engine burning cleanly loads its filter more slowly. Can I just have the DPF removed?

No. Removing a DPF that was fitted from the factory makes the vehicle fail the MOT and illegal to use on the road, and it is checked at test. Anyone offering DPF deletes for road cars is offering to make your vehicle unroadworthy. Do not go near it.
