If you run a van for a living, you already know the maths that matters. The repair invoice is the small number. The big number is the two days you did not work, the customer you rescheduled, and the job that went to somebody else. That is why carbon cleaning for vans is a different conversation to carbon cleaning for a family hatchback — the case for prevention is stronger and the tolerance for downtime is lower.

Why working vans build deposits fastest

Almost every factor that accelerates carbon build-up is built into how a van is used.

Weight. A loaded van works its engine harder at every speed. More fuel burned, more soot produced, more work through the EGR and the turbo.

Idling. Parked up with the engine running while you unload, take a call, or keep the heater going in February. Idling produces low exhaust temperatures and incomplete combustion — the ideal conditions for deposits, and none of it shows on the odometer.

Short urban hops. Three miles between jobs across Newcastle or round the Team Valley. The engine never reaches the sustained temperature it needs, and the DPF never gets a chance to regenerate properly. It is the same mechanism described in why short journeys wreck your engine's internals, but with a heavier vehicle doing it all day.

Stop-start traffic. The A1, the A19 at rush hour, roadworks, town centres. Load without airflow.

Mileage. A van doing 25,000 to 30,000 miles a year reaches every wear threshold two to three times faster than a private car.

Your van does not get a gentle life on a Tuesday. It gets loaded, idled and thrashed round a town, and the deposits build accordingly.

Those repair figures are broad UK ranges and rough guides only — vans vary enormously and so do garages. The point is not the precise number. It is that every row above the last one takes days out of your diary, and the last one takes an evening.

And to be straight about it: a yearly clean does not guarantee none of those failures happen. Turbos, injectors and EGR valves fail for electrical and mechanical reasons that have nothing to do with soot. Scheduling it around actual work

This is where mobile matters more for a van than for anything else. Dropping a van at a garage means arranging a lift, losing the tools for a day and rescheduling customers.   5. Get a decent run in afterwards. Twenty to thirty minutes at road speed helps clear residue and lets the DPF do its job. A motorway job the next morning is ideal.

Which clean, and how often

For most working vans doing high mileage with plenty of idling, the deep clean at £149 is the sensible annual choice — the longer cycle time suits an engine carrying more deposit than average. A newer, lower-mileage van on mostly longer runs is fine with the basic £99 clean. Once a year, close to the service, suits the majority. If your van spends most of its life idling and crawling round a city centre, a shorter interval can be justified. If it lives on the A1 doing long runs, once a year is plenty.
