Fleet Carbon Cleaning: Keeping Vehicles Out of the Garage

The cost of a fleet vehicle breaking down is never just the repair. It is the job that did not get done, the customer who waited, and the van that sat in a workshop queue for four days.

If you run half a dozen vans, a handful of pool cars or a mixed yard of light commercials, you already know where the real money goes. It is not the servicing. It is the unplanned days. Fleet carbon cleaning will not eliminate those, but it targets a specific, predictable, expensive family of failures — the ones that come from soot slowly choking the intake, the EGR and the exhaust side of a diesel engine.

This is a practical piece about how scheduled cleaning fits into a small fleet's maintenance routine, what it realistically achieves, and where it does not help at all.

The failures worth preventing

Fleet vehicles fail in patterns. Across the vans and light commercials we see across the North East, the carbon-related ones cluster tightly:

  • EGR valves sticking — limp mode, rough running, a management light that keeps returning.
  • DPF blockage — endless regeneration cycles, then a warning that will not clear, then a forced regen at a garage or worse.
  • Turbo vane seizure on variable geometry turbos — hesitation, then a very expensive noise.
  • Injector deposits — ragged idle, poorer economy, harder cold starts.

What these share is that none of them arrive suddenly. They build over months. The vehicle gets a little worse each week and the driver quietly adjusts, so the first anyone in the office hears about it is when the van does not come back from a job. Why fleet vehicles get there faster

A fleet van is rarely driven the way an engine likes. Look at a typical day for a trades van or a service vehicle in the North East:

That last row is the one fleet managers underrate. A privately owned car has one person who notices it feels flat. A pool van has nobody.

What a mobile clean actually involves

The mechanics are the same as for any car. The machine electrolyses distilled water into hydrogen and oxygen and feeds that into the air intake while the engine idles. It helps break down and burn off carbon on the valves, injector tips, piston crowns, the EGR and the exhaust side, and the loosened material leaves through the exhaust. Nothing is dismantled and no harsh chemicals go into the engine.

For a fleet, the important word is mobile. The machine runs from the van. We come to your yard, your depot or your car park, and vehicles never leave the site. There is no drop-off, no collection, no courtesy vehicle, no day lost to a workshop booking. That is usually the difference between a fleet actually doing this and putting it off for another year.

Building it into a maintenance schedule

We sell this as routine annual maintenance, not as a fix. The way to get value from it across a fleet is to schedule it rather than react with it.

  1. Tie it to the service interval. Once a year, alongside or close to each vehicle's service, is the sensible baseline. Doing both together means one disruption instead of two — see our note on the right order.
  2. Split the fleet by duty cycle. High-mileage motorway vehicles are usually fine annually. Vehicles doing town work, lots of idling or heavy short-hop delivery runs benefit from every six months.
  3. Batch vehicles into one visit. Several vehicles at one address on one day is far more efficient than six separate call-outs, and it is where any sensible fleet pricing comes from.
  4. Pick a quiet window. Evenings, Saturdays, or the day the vans are parked up anyway. We run this alongside another business, so we are genuinely flexible on timing.
  5. File the paperwork per vehicle. Invoice and receipt every time. It goes in the vehicle's history file.

The honest maths

We are not going to hand you a fabricated percentage. What we can do is set out the shape of the decision.

An EGR valve replacement on a common light commercial typically runs into the low hundreds of pounds fitted, and a DPF replacement can reach four figures — both broad, rough UK guides, and the variation between models is enormous. Against that, a basic clean is £99 and a deep clean £149, with no call-out fee anywhere in the North East.

The point is not that one clean saves one DPF. It is that across a fleet of ten vehicles over three years, reducing how often those components clog is worth considerably more than the cleaning costs — and the downtime avoided is worth more again. Where it will not help

Being straight about this is more useful to a fleet manager than a sales pitch.

A carbon clean does not repair mechanical faults. If a van has a failed EGR valve, a collapsed DPF, a leaking injector or a sick turbo, it needs a garage and a diagnosis, not us. If a vehicle is throwing a persistent fault code, get that read first — we would rather tell you to spend the money elsewhere than take a booking that will not achieve anything.

It also will not deliver a guaranteed fuel saving. Some vehicles show an improvement, some do not, and any number we quoted you would be invented. Treat any economy gain as a bonus rather than the business case.

Finally, it does not replace servicing. Oil, filters and the rest still matter. This reaches the parts a service does not.

A basic clean takes roughly 45 to 60 minutes per vehicle and a deep clean 90 to 120 minutes, so a full day of basic cleans on a yard with vehicles ready to go is a meaningful number. The bigger constraint is usually your schedule, not ours — we work around when the vehicles are actually parked up.

Yes. We provide an invoice and receipt every time, and we can invoice the company for the whole visit. That paperwork also does a second job: it builds a documented maintenance history for each vehicle, which supports resale value when the fleet is refreshed.

Will this reduce our repair bills?

It improves the odds rather than guaranteeing anything. Carbon cleaning is preventative maintenance for the intake, EGR and exhaust side. It keeps those components fresh and capable so they are less likely to become a failure. It cannot fix a component that is already failing, and we will tell you if a vehicle needs a garage rather than us.
