Towing, Caravans and Engine Deposits
Two tonnes on the back changes how your engine burns fuel, how hot it runs and what it leaves behind. Some of that is good for the engine. The rest of the year is the problem.
Ask most caravanners whether towing is hard on the car and you get a shrug. It pulls fine, it goes up the A1 at 60, it comes back. But towing is genuinely a different mode of operation for an engine, and its effect on engine deposits is more interesting than "it wears it out faster".
In fact the towing itself is often the healthiest thing your car does all year. The damage tends to happen in the other eleven months.
What changes when you hitch up
Add a caravan and your engine spends its time in a completely different part of its operating map. More throttle, more boost, more fuel per stroke, higher cylinder pressures and much higher exhaust gas temperatures — and it holds those conditions for hours rather than seconds.
The turbo works harder and hotter. The EGR system behaves differently under high load. Cooling systems, gearbox and brakes all work near the top of their range on a long climb. Fuel consumption goes up sharply, which is the visible sign that far more fuel is being burned per mile than usual.
The good news first
Sustained high exhaust temperature is exactly what the exhaust side of a modern engine wants. It is the condition a DPF needs to regenerate properly and completely, and it keeps EGR deposits soft and the turbo vanes moving through their full travel rather than sitting in one position getting sooted in.
A four-hour tow down to Yorkshire is effectively a very long, very effective version of the Italian tune-up — with the advantage that you are doing it at legal speeds with genuine load, which is what actually matters.
The tow is not what harms the car. It is the six weeks of three-mile trips before and after it.
Where the deposits actually come from
Three things, and none of them happen on the motorway.
Standing. Most tow cars are family cars used lightly. A car that sits on the drive between holidays and then does short local journeys is building deposits in exactly the way described in why short journeys wreck your engine's internals. On a diesel that also means interrupted regenerations, over and over.
Heavy work at low speed. Manoeuvring a caravan onto a pitch, crawling in site traffic, pulling away up a slope from a standstill with everything loaded. High load with almost no airflow and low exhaust temperature is the single worst combination for soot.
Enrichment on the hard bits. Sustained full-load climbs — the A66 over Stainmore, the A68, the way over to the Lakes — mean maximum fuelling. Combustion at full fuelling is less complete than at part load, and some of what does not burn ends up as deposit on injector tips, valves and piston crowns.
What that means for the components that cost money

That last row deserves a mention on its own. If you tow regularly, the manufacturer's severe-use or short-interval service schedule is usually the one that applies to you, not the standard one. Oil is cheap compared with a turbo.
A sensible yearly routine for a tow car
- Late winter: book the annual service. If you tow properly, use the severe-duty interval and the correct oil specification for your DPF.
- Early spring, a few weeks before the first trip: the yearly carbon clean, close to the service. Timing it now means anything unexpected is dealt with on your driveway rather than a campsite.
- Before each trip: check tyre pressures loaded, coolant, oil level, and that the noseweight is right. Boring, and it prevents more roadside problems than anything else.
- On the road: let a regeneration finish. If the idle is raised and there is a hot smell as you pull onto a site, drive a couple more miles rather than switching off.
- Off-season, monthly: a 20 to 30 minute run at proper road speed. Free, and it does more for the DPF than anything you can buy.
- Keep the invoices. Tow cars sell on condition and history to buyers who know exactly what to ask — see how documented maintenance protects resale value.
Being straight about what cleaning does here
A carbon clean is not a towing upgrade. It will not raise the power your engine makes, it will not increase what you can legally tow, and it will not fix a car that is genuinely out of its depth pulling your outfit. If the car struggles on the hills fully loaded, the answer is a more suitable tow car, not a service product.
What a yearly clean does is keep the intake and combustion side free of the deposits that quietly cost you response and economy, and reduce the loading on the components that are expensive when they fail. On a car that does heavy work a few weeks a year and short journeys the rest, that is a sensible bit of routine maintenance — the same argument as in the EGR maths, and just as honest about not being a guarantee.

Does towing a caravan cause more carbon build-up?
It cuts both ways. Long towing runs at motorway speeds keep exhaust temperatures high, which suits the DPF and helps burn light deposits off — that part is good for the engine. What causes deposits is the heavy low-speed work at either end of the trip and the way most tow cars sit unused between holidays doing only short local journeys.
Should I carbon clean before or after the towing season?
Before, and ideally a few weeks ahead rather than the night before you leave. That gives you time to drive the car afterwards and get any unrelated problem sorted at home rather than at a campsite in Cornwall. A clean paired with the annual service in early spring works well for most caravanners.
Will a carbon clean give me more towing power?
It will not add power beyond what the engine was designed to make. What it can do is help recover response the engine has lost to deposits, which on a tow car tends to show as slightly crisper pull and less hesitation. If the car genuinely lacks the capability to tow your outfit, cleaning will not change that and you need a different tow car.
What is the worst thing I can do to a tow car?
Leaving it standing for months and then using it only for short cold trips between trips away, then loading it to its limit on the first hot day of summer. Occasional long runs through the winter, correct servicing, and never switching the engine off part way through a regeneration will do more good than any product.
