Does the 'Italian Tune-Up' Actually Work?
Every garage in the country has told a customer to "give it a good run". It is not rubbish advice — but it only works on half the engine, and it is worth knowing which half.
The Italian tune-up is one of the last bits of genuinely useful folk wisdom left in motoring. Take the car out, get it properly hot, work it hard for half an hour, and it comes back feeling sharper. The name supposedly comes from how Italian cars were driven when they were new, and mechanics have been prescribing it for decades.
So does the Italian tune-up work? Yes — and no. It does something real, it is free, and we recommend it to customers regularly. It also has a hard limit that most people never hear about, and that limit is exactly where a machine carbon clean earns its keep.
What a hard run genuinely does
Heat and load are the two things a short-journey car never gets. When an engine sits at proper operating temperature under sustained load, three useful things happen.
Exhaust gas temperatures climb high enough to burn soot. On a diesel, this is what triggers and completes a DPF regeneration. A filter that has been quietly loading up during weeks of school runs and shop trips finally gets the conditions it needs to burn its soot off properly. That alone is worth doing, and it is why so many DPF warning lights clear after a motorway run.
Things that stick get moved. EGR valves and variable-geometry turbo vanes seize because they sit in soot and rarely travel through their full range. Sustained load moves them properly and hot exhaust gas keeps the deposits soft rather than baked. It is not a cure, but it slows the process down.
Light deposits get burned rather than accumulated. Soft, recent soot on the exhaust side of the engine will oxidise at high temperature. Old, hard, varnished carbon will not.
A good run cleans the bits of the engine the exhaust gas touches. It does nothing at all to the bits it doesn't.
Where it stops working
Here is the part that gets left out of the advice. On a modern direct-injection engine — which is nearly every petrol built in the last fifteen years and every diesel — fuel is sprayed straight into the cylinder. It never passes over the back of the intake valves.
On an old port-injection petrol, fuel constantly washed those valves and kept them reasonably clean. That was the era the Italian tune-up was invented in. Take that fuel wash away and oil vapour from the crankcase breather bakes onto the valve stems and seats, layer after layer, and no amount of hard driving will touch it, because there is nothing hot and no solvent flowing over that surface. The same applies to injector tips and piston crown deposits. High load can help keep them from getting worse. It does not remove what is already baked on.

How to do it properly, if you are going to
- Only ever on a fully warmed engine. Cold and hard is how you damage things. Give it ten minutes of normal driving first.
- Find a road where you can hold a steady 50 to 70mph without stopping — the A1, the A19 or the A66 are all fine for it. Stop-start does not count.
- Drop a gear. You want the engine sitting meaningfully higher in its rev range under genuine load, not loafing at 1,600rpm in top.
- Hold it for 20 to 30 minutes. Regeneration and heat soak take time; five minutes achieves very little.
- Let it cool on the way home rather than switching off straight after, especially on a turbo diesel.
- Do it monthly if your normal driving is short trips. Once is a gesture, a habit is maintenance.
Do not do it if there is a warning light on, if the car has a misfire, if it is using oil, or if you have not serviced it in a while. Hard running finds weaknesses. That is a separate conversation, and one we cover in can a carbon clean damage my engine?
So which one do you need?
If you already do a long fast commute every day, your engine effectively gets an Italian tune-up daily and you are in the best-case group. You will still accumulate intake valve deposits, but slowly. Once a year alongside a service is plenty — see how often you should carbon clean.
If your driving is the classic North East pattern — five miles to work, the school run, Sainsbury's, back — then hard runs are the single best free thing you can do, and they still will not reach half the deposits. That combination of short journeys and direct injection is the one that ends up costing people money in EGR and turbo bills later on.

Does an Italian tune-up actually work?
Partly. A sustained run at high load and temperature genuinely helps the exhaust side of the engine — it gets the DPF hot enough to regenerate, keeps the EGR and turbo vanes moving and burns off light soot. What it cannot do is reach intake valves on a direct-injection engine, because no fuel washes over them, and it will not remove hard baked-on deposits that have been building for years.
How long and how hard should the run be?
Aim for 20 to 30 minutes of continuous driving at a steady 50 to 70mph once the engine is fully up to temperature, using a lower gear than usual so the engine sits higher in its rev range under real load. Legal speeds and sensible revs — you are after sustained heat and load, not a thrashing.
Can an Italian tune-up damage anything?
On a healthy, warm, well-serviced engine it is normal driving. It is a bad idea on a cold engine, on an engine with a known fault or a warning light, or on a car with tired oil, a rattling timing chain or heavy oil consumption. If in doubt, get the fault looked at first.
Do I still need a carbon clean if I drive it hard regularly?
You need one less urgently. Drivers with a long, fast daily commute build deposits far slower than short-journey drivers, and they may genuinely be able to stretch the interval. But hard driving does not reach intake valves on direct-injection engines, so a yearly clean alongside a service still catches what the motorway never touches.
