Buying a Used Diesel: The Checks That Matter Most

Modern diesels are excellent when they have been used properly and expensive when they haven't. The difference is visible before you hand over any money, if you know where to look.

Buying a used diesel is not the gamble people make it out to be, but it is a different gamble to buying a used petrol. The engine itself will usually outlast the car. What catches people out is the emissions equipment bolted to it — the DPF, the EGR, the turbo — and every one of those fails for the same underlying reason: carbon, and the driving pattern that produces it.

So the checks that matter most are not really about the car. They are about the life it has had. Here is how to work that out in half an hour on someone's driveway.

Start with the history, before you see the car

The government MOT history checker is free and it is the most useful thing available to you. Put the registration in before you drive across town.

You are looking for three things. First, the mileage trail — steady 12,000 to 15,000 a year is a normal car; 4,000 a year on a modern diesel is a warning, because that is a lifetime of short cold trips. Second, advisories, and specifically whether they were ever addressed or just repeated year after year. Third, gaps. A year with no MOT usually means a year off the road, and you want to know why.

A diesel does not mind mileage. It minds the wrong sort of mileage.

The questions to ask on the phone

  1. "What did you use it for?" You want commuting, towing, long runs. You do not want "just the school run and the shops" — that is the pattern described in why short journeys wreck an engine's internals.
  2. "How far is your commute?" Under five miles each way on a diesel is a red flag every time.
  3. "Has the DPF light ever come on?" Listen carefully to the answer, not just the word.
  4. "Has it had an EGR, turbo or injector done?" A replaced EGR is not bad news — it is honest news, and it tells you the deposits were bad enough once.
  5. "Is there a service history and can you send me a photo of it?" Anyone who refuses this has told you everything.
  6. "When was the cambelt or chain done, and at what mileage?" Get the receipt or budget for the job.

The cold start is non-negotiable

Insist the engine is stone cold when you arrive. If the seller has warmed it up "so it's ready for you", be suspicious and come back another day. Almost every diesel problem worth knowing about shows itself in the first ninety seconds from cold.

Watch for a long crank, a rough shaking idle that will not settle, a blue haze at start-up, a clattery diesel knock that stays harsh after a minute, or a plume from the exhaust that hangs about. A little white vapour on a cold North East morning is condensation and normal. Grey or blue smoke is not.

Those figures are broad UK ranges and rough guides only — parts and labour vary enormously by model and by garage. Treat them as a sense of scale when you are deciding how hard to negotiate, not as a quote.

Drive it long enough to get it properly hot, and include a stretch where you can hold 50 to 60mph for a few miles. Plenty of faults only appear once the turbo is working and the engine is at full temperature. If the seller only offers a lap of the estate, that is not a test drive.

The carbon-related faults that cost the most

Three components account for most of the big diesel bills, and all three are downstream of deposits.

The EGR valve sits directly in the path of hot, sooty exhaust gas being recirculated back into the intake. It clogs, it sticks, and when it sticks it triggers lights and limp mode. The costs and the prevention arithmetic are in EGR valve carbon build-up.

The DPF traps soot and burns it off during regeneration, which needs sustained heat the car simply never gets on short trips. Once it is loaded past a certain point you are into forced regens, cleaning or replacement — the ranges are in what a DPF replacement costs in the UK.

The variable geometry turbo has vanes that adjust airflow, and soot seizes them. A sticking turbo feels like lag, surging or a sudden power loss, and it is covered in sticking turbo vanes.

Is a diesel still the right buy?

Ask honestly what your own driving looks like. If you do a proper commute, tow, or cover serious annual mileage, a modern diesel is efficient, long-legged and a sensible purchase — and the maintenance is straightforward. Read towing, caravans and engine deposits if that is your use case.

If your own driving is going to be three miles each way in Newcastle traffic, you will inherit exactly the problem the previous owner is selling. Buy a petrol or a hybrid instead. That is not us talking ourselves out of work — it is what we would tell a mate.

If you do buy one, get anything faulty diagnosed and fixed first, then start your own paper trail. A service and a carbon clean in the first month gives you a known starting point, an invoice for the folder, and the beginning of the documented history that will protect the car's value when it is your turn to sell.

What is the single most important check when buying a used diesel?

How the car has been driven. A diesel that has done 90,000 motorway miles is usually in better health than one that has done 40,000 short urban trips, because the DPF, EGR and turbo have had the heat and load they need. The MOT history and the previous owner's postcode tell you more about this than the mileage figure does.

Is a high-mileage diesel a bad buy?

Not automatically. Mileage matters far less than how it was accumulated and whether it was serviced. A well-documented 120,000-mile motorway diesel with a cambelt receipt is often a better bet than a 55,000-mile town car with two stamps and a DPF light.

Should I walk away if the DPF light is on?

Walk away or negotiate hard, and never accept the explanation that it just needs a good run. It might, but a failed DPF is a four-figure item and a forced regeneration or replacement is not something you want to discover in your first month. Get it diagnosed at the seller's expense or move on.

Is it worth carbon cleaning a diesel straight after buying it?

If the car is mechanically sound with no warning lights, it is a sensible way to start ownership on a known footing, especially if the history suggests a lot of short-journey use. It will not fix a fault, so get any diagnosed first. Treat it as the first entry in the maintenance record you are going to keep from now on.
