Why Your MPG Quietly Drops Every Year

Nobody notices fuel economy falling by a per cent or two a year. You just notice, one day, that the car costs more to run than it used to and you have no idea when that happened.

Ask someone what their car did when it was new and they will usually have a figure. Ask what it does now and you often get a shrug. That gap is the point of this article: MPG drops over time so gradually that the decline hides inside normal variation, and by the time it is obvious you have long since stopped comparing.

The useful question is not "has it got worse" — almost certainly it has — but "which parts of that are recoverable and which are just an older car being an older car". Those are two very different lists, and mixing them up is how people end up disappointed by spending.

The recoverable causes

Carbon deposits on the combustion side

The big one, and the one with no warning light. Over thousands of miles, deposits accumulate on intake valves and ports, on injector tips, on piston crowns and through the EGR path. Coked injectors atomise fuel more coarsely, so combustion is less complete. Deposit-laden intake tracts disturb airflow and absorb fuel. A gummed EGR meters exhaust gas badly. None of it trips a fault code; the car simply burns a little more fuel to do the same work, and does so a little more every year. Short cold journeys accelerate all of it, which is why the school-run driving pattern is so hard on an engine.

Tyre pressures

A tyre loses pressure slowly whether you drive on it or not, and cold weather drops it further. Running significantly under the recommended figure raises rolling resistance and costs real fuel — this is the cheapest MPG you will ever recover, and it takes five minutes.

Tyres themselves

Replacement tyres are frequently not the same rolling-resistance class as the originals. A budget tyre can be measurably thirstier than a premium one on the same car. Nobody tells you that at the fitting bay.

Air filter and spark plugs

A clogged filter restricts breathing. Worn plugs give a weaker spark and less complete combustion. Both are cheap, both are on the service schedule, and both get skipped on budget servicing more often than you would think.

Engine oil

Old or wrong-viscosity oil raises internal friction. Short-trip cars dilute their oil with fuel and moisture, making it worse. If your car does 5,000 damp miles a year, change the oil by time rather than mileage.

Sticking brakes

A seized caliper slide or a binding handbrake mechanism drags constantly. It is common on cars that sit outside through salty North East winters, and it is easy to miss until a wheel is noticeably hotter than the others.

Most of what people call "the engine getting tired" is a stack of small, individually unremarkable things — none of which would fail an MOT.

The causes you can't reverse

Being straight about this matters, because it sets a ceiling on what any maintenance can achieve.

Genuine mechanical wear. Piston rings, bores and valve seats wear. Compression falls slowly over hundreds of thousands of miles. No cleaning restores metal.

Tired sensors. Lambda sensors get lazy long before they fail outright, and a lazy sensor gives the ECU slightly wrong information, which it acts on. That is a replacement job, not a cleaning one.

A catalytic converter past its best. Cats have a finite working life. That mostly shows in emissions rather than economy, but it is part of the same ageing picture.

Your own driving. Unpopular but true. People generally get less careful with a car as it ages, the commute changes, the roof bars stay on all summer, the boot fills with stuff. That is decline too.

How to find out where you actually stand

Before spending anything, get a real baseline. Do not use the trip computer — it estimates from injector duty cycle, tends to read optimistically, and averages over so many miles that any change disappears into the noise.

  1. Fill the tank to the first click at the same pump. Zero the trip.
  2. Drive your usual route until the tank is well down.
  3. Refill at the same pump to the same first click. Note litres and miles.
  4. Miles ÷ litres × 4.546 = MPG.
  5. Repeat for two or three tanks so you know the natural spread.

Now compare that against what the car managed when you got it, and against the official combined figure with a healthy dose of realism — official figures were never achievable in ordinary driving. If you are a long way adrift, work down the recoverable list from free to paid.

Where a carbon clean sits

It addresses exactly one line on that table: deposits. That is a real and often significant line, particularly on a direct injection petrol or a diesel that lives on short journeys. The stronger argument is simply not letting the decline build. An engine cleaned once a year alongside its service never accumulates the deposit load that produces the drop in the first place, and the emissions components stay clear of the fouling that turns into a four-figure bill. That is the position we take throughout, and it is why we sell this as annual maintenance rather than a cure.

How much MPG can I realistically get back?

Nobody can tell you that in advance, and we will not guess. It depends entirely on how much of your decline is recoverable — deposits, tyre pressures, a tired air filter — versus permanent wear. Measure brim to brim over the same route before and after, and you will have a real number rather than a hopeful one.

Is my car's economy meant to get worse as it ages?

A little, yes. Some mechanical wear is unavoidable and no maintenance reverses it. But most of the decline people notice over the first ten years is maintenance-related and at least partly recoverable, which is why a well-kept high-mileage car often does better than a neglected younger one.

Why is my MPG always worse in winter?

Cold air is denser, engines run rich until warm, oil is thicker, tyre pressures fall, and heated screens and lights add electrical load. Combine that with short trips where the engine never reaches temperature and winter economy is genuinely, substantially worse — that is normal, not a fault.
