How Long Does a Carbon Clean Take?
Roughly 45 to 60 minutes for a basic clean and 90 to 120 for a deep one — but the more useful answer is how much of that time you actually have to give up.
How long a carbon clean takes matters for two reasons. The obvious one is planning your day. The less obvious one is that the length of the cycle is not an inconvenience to be minimised — it is the mechanism. A short clean is a small clean. Anyone advertising a fifteen-minute job is telling you more than they intend to.

Why the cycle length is the job
Hydrogen carbon cleaning is gradual. The gas alters combustion in the chamber, and that altered burn works on the deposits progressively — it is closer to soaking a roasting tin than scrubbing one. Twice the time genuinely does more work than half of it, which is the entire difference between our two services. Same machine, same gas, same process, more time on task.
The cycle time isn't padding. It's the part you're buying.
This is also why we will not compress a deep clean into an hour because you have somewhere to be. If the diary is tight on your side, we would rather move the appointment — evenings and weekends are usually available — than take £149 for an £99 job.
What makes an appointment run longer
The times above are typical. These are the things that push a job toward the upper end of the range:
- Arriving with a stone-cold engine. The engine must be at proper operating temperature before we begin. If it has been sitting all night in February, add ten minutes.
- An awkward engine bay. Some cars need a bit more care to connect neatly to the intake. Rarely more than a few extra minutes.
- Larger engines and commercials. A big van or a large-capacity diesel has more surface area to work on. Our van and light commercial work tends to sit at the longer end.
- A genuinely filthy engine. If we can see from the exhaust that there is a lot coming out, we would rather run to the top of the window than stop early.
- Questions. Quite a few customers want to watch and talk it through, which is fine — we would rather explain it properly than rush off.
How much of it is actually your time
This is the number that should matter to you. You are needed for a few minutes at the start — keys, a quick conversation about the car, any symptoms you have noticed — and a few minutes at the end for the handover and the invoice. Everything in between is us and a gently idling engine on your drive.
Compare that with the same job at a garage. There you drop the car off, arrange a lift home or wait, and go back for it. A one-hour job easily eats half a morning of your life. Because we come to your home or workplace with no call-out fee, the actual cost to your day is about ten minutes. That is the real argument for mobile over garage, and it has nothing to do with the cleaning itself.
Planning it around your week
A few practical points from doing this for a living.
Book it near your service. A carbon clean and a service in the same week is efficient and gets the best from both — the sequencing argument is set out in carbon clean before or after a service. It also means one entry in your diary rather than two.
Evenings and weekends are genuinely available. This runs alongside another business, so we are more flexible than a nine-to-five garage. A Thursday evening or a Sunday morning is usually workable — put your preferred windows on the booking request form and we will come back with what fits.
Do it at work if that suits better. Plenty of our appointments happen in a workplace car park while the customer is at their desk. As long as we can park safely alongside, the location makes no difference to the job.
Leave time for a proper drive afterwards. Not required, but a longer run in the day or two after helps clear anything remaining and is worth doing anyway if your normal pattern is short journeys.
What about the drive after?
There is no downtime. You can drive away immediately and drive completely normally — no running-in, no restrictions, nothing to be careful about. Any effect you are going to notice is either apparent on the first drive or emerges over the following week as you settle back into your usual routes.
