It is not how far you drive. It is how many times a week your engine has to start from cold and then never quite get hot.
The A19 is not the free pass people think
A lot of Sunderland drivers tell us their car does plenty of dual carriageway miles, so it must be fine. Sometimes it is. Often it is not, because the A19 at commuting hours is not a clean run.
Between the Testo's junction, the Silverlink and the approaches to the Tyne Tunnel, a huge chunk of the northbound commute is spent at low speed in a queue. That is the worst of both worlds for a diesel: enough engine hours to build soot, not enough sustained load or exhaust heat to burn it off. A DPF regeneration that starts on the A19 and gets interrupted by a queue at Boldon leaves the filter more loaded than before it began. The Northern Spire and the A1231 corridor have made the western side of the city quicker, but the same logic applies — a fast five minutes followed by a slow five minutes is not the same as twenty steady miles.
Short coastal hops
The other half of the picture is the non-commuting driving. Roker to the seafront. Seaburn to Sainsbury's. Fulwell to the school and back. In a compact city where most of what you need is within three miles, a lot of engines spend their entire lives inside the warm-up phase. That is the single most reliable way to build carbon on valves and injector tips, and it is why we so often see cars with 45,000 miles that are dirtier inside than a 90,000-mile motorway car.
The practical bit: where we do the work
- Driveways are ideal. Most of Doxford, Silksworth, Washington and the newer estates have them. We pull up alongside, work from the van, and the car stays put.
- Terraced streets usually still work. Much of Millfield, Southwick, Hendon and Roker has no off-street parking. We need a legal spot where the car can idle safely for the duration — a quieter back street is often better than the main road.
- Workplaces are frequently easier. Industrial estate and business park car parks in Washington, Pallion, Pennywell and Doxford give us plenty of room. You are inside working, the car sits there for an hour, you get the invoice at the end.
- Evenings and weekends are genuinely available. This runs alongside another business, so we can work around a shift pattern rather than expecting you to work around us.

What actually happens to the car
The machine electrolyses distilled water into hydrogen and oxygen and feeds that into the air intake while the engine idles. It helps break down and burn off carbon on the valves, injector tips, piston crowns, the EGR and the exhaust side, and the loosened carbon leaves through the exhaust. Nothing is dismantled, and no harsh chemicals go into the engine.
A basic clean is around 45 to 60 minutes; a deep clean is around 90 to 120. We provide an invoice and a receipt every time, which is worth keeping — a documented maintenance history is one of the few things that genuinely holds a car's value at trade-in.
We sell this as routine annual maintenance, best done once a year alongside or close to your service. It is not a repair. If your car has a live fault, a persistent warning light or a specific mechanical problem, you need a garage and a diagnosis — and we will say so rather than take the booking.

Salt air is a bodywork and brake problem rather than a combustion one, so it does not directly cause carbon deposits. What does matter on the coast is the driving pattern: lots of short hops between Roker, Seaburn, Fulwell and the town centre, often in cold damp air. That combination keeps the engine below its proper working temperature, which is what actually builds deposits.
Is there an extra charge for Washington or Houghton?
No. There is no call-out fee and no mileage surcharge anywhere in the coverage area. Washington, Houghton-le-Spring, Hetton, Silksworth, Ryhope, Doxford and the city centre are all the same price: £99 for a basic carbon clean and £149 for a deep clean.
My car does big A19 miles. Do I still need this?
You are in better shape than a short-hop city car, but you are not exempt. A daily A19 run that spends twenty minutes crawling near the Silverlink or the Testo's junction is not the sustained clean burn people imagine. Once a year alongside a service is still the sensible interval, and if the car genuinely does long clear motorway runs we will happily tell you the basic clean is enough.
