Do Hybrids Need Carbon Cleaning? (Short Answer: Often More)

People assume a hybrid engine has an easy life because it does less work. In deposit terms it is often the opposite — it does the hardest kind of work there is, in short bursts, over and over.

We get asked this a lot, usually with a slight air of "you are going to say yes because you want the money". Fair enough. So here is the honest position on carbon cleaning for hybrid cars: for most hybrids driven the way most hybrids are driven in the North East, yes, it is at least as worthwhile as on a conventional petrol car, and often more so. But the reasoning matters more than the answer, so let us go through it.

Fewer miles does not mean an easier life

The petrol engine in a hybrid might only be running for a third or half of the time you are moving. Owners reasonably conclude that it is barely being used. The problem is which third.

Carbon deposits are not caused by miles. They are caused by incomplete combustion, oil vapour and low temperatures. The single worst thing you can do to an engine, deposit-wise, is start it cold, run it briefly, and shut it down before it reaches operating temperature — then repeat. That is a fair description of what happens under the bonnet of a hybrid on a five-mile urban commute.

A conventional car doing the same journey at least keeps its engine running the whole way, so the coolant and oil temperature climbs steadily. A hybrid's engine may fire up for ninety seconds at a set of lights, shut down, sit for two minutes, fire again. Each restart is a fresh cold-ish start with the enrichment that comes with it. The engine spends a disproportionate share of its running life in exactly the condition that produces soot.

Carbon does not care how many miles you did. It cares how many of those miles the engine spent below proper operating temperature.

The specific things that stack up on a hybrid

Repeated cold-ish starts

Combustion is less complete when the chamber is cool and the fuel mixture is richer. More unburnt fuel means more soot on the piston crown, valve faces and injector tips.

Heavy EGR use

Most hybrid petrol engines run on an Atkinson or Miller cycle with significant exhaust gas recirculation for efficiency. EGR is good for emissions and economy. It is also the main route by which soot gets into the intake tract in the first place. More EGR, more soot in the ports.

Long idle periods with the engine off

Sitting still is not neutral. Oil drains down, the engine cools, condensation forms in the crankcase, and that moisture ends up in the oil and eventually back through the breather into the intake.

Direct injection on many models

The plug-in that never gets plugged in is, ironically, one of the healthier cases for the engine. The one charged religiously and used for a three-mile school run is the one whose petrol engine we would want to look after.

What we actually do to a hybrid, and what changes

Mechanically, almost nothing changes. The service is the same: hydrogen and oxygen from electrolysed distilled water fed into the air intake while the engine idles, breaking down deposits on valves, injector tips, piston crowns and the exhaust side, with the loosened carbon going out through the tailpipe. Nothing is dismantled and no chemicals go into the engine.

The one practical difference is that a hybrid will happily shut its engine off mid-treatment if you let it. Before we start, we put the car into a state where the petrol engine will run continuously — most hybrids have a maintenance or inspection mode for exactly this reason, and where they do not, there is usually a load condition that achieves the same thing. We check the car's specific arrangement before we quote a time. We do not touch the high voltage system at any point; there is no reason to.

Expect the same rough timings as any other car: around 45 to 60 minutes for the basic clean, 90 to 120 for the deep. Our timings article goes into what stretches it.

When we would tell you not to bother

We would rather keep the customer than take one booking.

  • A nearly new hybrid, low mileage, driven on long runs. Nothing to shift yet. Start the annual habit at the two or three year mark.
  • A car with an actual fault. If it is throwing a hybrid system fault, a misfire on one cylinder, or a specific drivetrain code, that is a diagnostic job for a garage. Cleaning will not fix a failed coil or an injector with a bad seal.
  • A battery electric car. There is no engine. There is nothing to clean. Anyone offering this is selling you air.

The realistic case for doing it

A hybrid's petrol engine tends to outlive its owner's patience with the car, which is exactly why it gets neglected. It runs quietly, it runs less, and nobody thinks about it until the engine management light comes on. Meanwhile the deposits are building up in the conditions best suited to building them up.

Is carbon cleaning safe on a hybrid?

Yes. Nothing is dismantled, no harsh chemicals go into the engine, and we work with the petrol engine idling in the mode the car itself provides for servicing. We do not touch the high voltage system at any point. The one practical difference is that a hybrid needs to be held in a state where the engine will run continuously, which we set up before we start.

Can you carbon clean a full electric car?

No, and nobody can. A battery electric car has no combustion engine, so there is nothing to clean and no exhaust for deposits to leave through. If anyone offers you a carbon clean for an EV, walk away.

What about a plug-in hybrid that mostly runs on battery?

A plug-in hybrid used the way most owners use one, charged nightly and driven on electric for the commute, is arguably the strongest case of all. The petrol engine sits cold for days, then runs briefly, then stops. It rarely gets the sustained heat that burns deposits off. If your plug-in petrol engine hardly ever gets a long run, treat it as a yearly maintenance item.

Will a carbon clean improve my hybrid's fuel economy?

It might, and we will not put a number on it because nobody honestly can. A hybrid's displayed MPG is dominated by how much of your journey ran on battery, so the effect of a cleaner engine is harder to see in the figures than on a conventional car. Judge it by how the petrol engine behaves when it cuts in, not by the trip computer.
