Rough Idle: The Common Causes, Ranked by Likelihood

We clean engines for a living, so you might expect this list to start with carbon. It does not. Here are the real rough idle causes in the order a sensible mechanic would work through them.

A rough idle is one of those symptoms that could mean almost anything, which is why so much of the advice online is useless. The trick is not knowing every possible cause — it is knowing which ones are common, which ones are cheap to rule out, and in what order to check them. So this is the honest ranking of rough idle causes, most likely first, with carbon fouling sitting where it genuinely belongs rather than where it would suit us.

First, describe the symptom properly

Before any of the causes, work out which of these you have. It narrows things down enormously.

Sudden and gradual are almost different problems. Sudden means something broke. Gradual means something wore out or built up. Keep that distinction in mind for everything below.

1. Ignition components — plugs and coils

This is the top of the list on petrol engines by a wide margin. Spark plugs wear their gap open over tens of thousands of miles, and ignition coils fail more often than people expect, particularly the coil-on-plug type that lives in a hot engine bay for a decade.

Signs: a distinct rhythmic shake, usually a stored misfire code for a specific cylinder, often worse under load or when damp. A failing coil frequently gives an intermittent fault that comes and goes with heat.

Cost as a rough guide: plugs are typically £60 to £150 fitted at a UK independent for a four cylinder; a single coil pack £60 to £180 fitted. Cheap to rule out and very often the answer. Do this before anything else.

2. Air leaks after the mass air flow sensor

Second most common, and the one that catches people out. A split intake hose, a perished breather pipe, a leaking intake manifold gasket or a cracked vacuum line lets unmeasured air into the engine. The ECU is fuelling for the air it measured, not the air that arrived, so the mixture goes lean and the idle wanders.

Signs: hunting or fluttering idle rather than a shake, a hiss or whistle you can sometimes hear with the bonnet up, lean running codes, and often an idle that improves once you are driving because the leak becomes proportionally trivial. On turbo petrols, split charge pipes are extremely common at ten years old.

Rough guide: often under £100 if it is a hose, more if it is a manifold gasket.

If your idle hunts rather than shakes, stop looking at fuel and start looking for a leak. Those are two different symptoms and people conflate them constantly.

3. Dirty or sticking throttle body and idle control

The throttle body accumulates a gummy film of oil and soot from the breather system, right on the edge of the plate where the tiny idle airflow is metered. A film thin enough to be invisible is enough to upset it. Some cars need the throttle adaptation reset after cleaning, which requires a scan tool.

Signs: idle too low or stalling on the overrun, poor idle recovery when you come off the throttle, sometimes an idle that is fine once revved.

4. Fuel delivery — injectors and pressure

A partly blocked or leaking injector will make one cylinder run wrong. On a diesel, a leaking injector return or a failing high pressure pump gives a distinctly uneven idle with a knocking note. On direct injection petrols, a weak high pressure fuel pump is a known weak point on several engines.

Signs: cylinder-specific misfire that follows the injector if you swap injectors around, fuel smell, hard starting, or a diesel that idles like a bag of spanners cold.

This is where a carbon clean can genuinely contribute — deposits on injector tips distort the spray pattern — but if an injector is electrically or mechanically failed, cleaning it from the outside will not help.

5. Carbon build-up on valves and in the chamber

Here is where we come in, and note that it is fifth.

Carbon affects idle in two ways. Deposits on the intake valve seat can stop the valve sealing perfectly, which costs you cylinder pressure at idle — the condition where the engine is least tolerant of any loss. And deposits in the port disturb the airflow, so cylinders end up filling unevenly, which shows up worst at idle because the airflow is smallest.

Signs that carbon is a plausible contributor: gradual onset over years, no fault codes or only generic random misfire codes, a car with high mileage or a short-journey life, servicing up to date, and worse when cold. Carbon on a direct injection petrol engine and a coked-up EGR on a diesel are the two usual patterns.

Signs it is not carbon: sudden onset, one specific cylinder consistently, any specific component fault code, or a car that has had this since it was three years old.

6. EGR valve sticking (mostly diesel)

A sticking EGR valve holding itself partly open at idle dumps exhaust gas into an engine that does not want any, and the idle goes lumpy and smoky. This is a genuine carbon problem and it is a common one on North East diesels doing short runs — we go into it in EGR valve carbon build-up.

7. Mechanical wear

Last, and thankfully least common: a burnt or bent valve, worn valve stem seals, a stretched timing chain that has drifted the cam timing, low compression on a cylinder. These do not get better and no cleaning process of any kind will help them.

Signs: a compression test tells you in twenty minutes. If a garage has told you a cylinder is down on compression, save your money — a carbon clean cannot restore compression on a worn or damaged engine, and anyone who tells you it can is not being straight with you.

A sensible order of attack

  1. Plug an OBD reader in and read the codes. £20 tool, saves hundreds.
  2. Note whether it is cold-only, constant, hunting or shaking.
  3. If it is sudden or cylinder-specific, go straight to a garage for diagnosis. Do not buy cleaning products.
  4. Check the obvious: plug and service interval, visible split hoses, air filter.
  5. Rule out air leaks and the throttle body.
  6. If it is a gradual, mild, code-free lumpiness on a car with a short-journey life, carbon is a reasonable next step.
  7. If nothing else explains it, ask for a compression test before spending more.

Where a carbon clean earns its money is the slow decline: an engine that has quietly got lumpier over years, that is otherwise healthy and well serviced, and that lives on short urban journeys. Done once a year alongside a service, it keeps deposits from getting to the point where they cause the symptom in the first place. That is prevention, and it is a much more honest thing to sell than a cure.

Is a rough idle dangerous to drive with?

A mild lumpiness is usually not urgent, but a genuine misfire is. Unburnt fuel passing into the exhaust can overheat and destroy a catalytic converter, which is a far bigger bill than the fault that caused it. If the engine management light is flashing rather than steady, stop driving it and get it looked at.

Will a carbon clean fix my rough idle?

Sometimes, if carbon is genuinely the cause — typically a gradual, mild lumpiness on a higher mileage engine with no fault codes and recent servicing. It will not fix a failed coil pack, a split intake hose, a leaking injector, worn plugs or a mechanical problem. If your rough idle appeared suddenly, treat it as a fault and get it diagnosed first.

Why is my idle rough only when cold?

Cold running uses a richer mixture and tighter tolerances, so marginal problems show up then and disappear once everything expands and warms. Common causes are worn spark plugs, early coil breakdown, carbon on the valves upsetting the seal, and coolant temperature sensor faults. If it clears completely within a minute or two and there are no codes, carbon is a plausible contributor.

Can I diagnose a rough idle myself?

You can get a long way with a cheap OBD reader and your ears. Read the codes, note whether the misfire is on one cylinder or several, and note whether it is cold-only or constant. That information alone will save a garage time and save you money. Anything involving pressure testing, compression or live data is a job for someone with the kit.
